Terrasse Orange Toi: A Tsunami Resilience Project by Nippon Koei | Tokio Marine Group

Izu, in Shizuoka Prefecture, is famous for its natural beauty. Tens of millions of tourists visit the region every year. But in 2018, the Toi district was designated a “Tsunami Disaster Special Security Zone,” meaning that in the event of a major earthquake along the Nankai trough, a tidal wave up to 10 meters high could hit the area. A straightforward countermeasure would have been to build a seawall. However, Nippon Koei Co., Ltd and Nippon Koei Urban Development, both part of ID&E Group and members of Tokio Marine, chose a different approach. To preserve local nature—and in particular, a beautiful pine grove treasured by local residents—they built a unique and stunning tourist hub that could double as an evacuation area. This video shows how the project came to be and illustrates the value Nippon Koei places in preserving harmony with local communities through its activities. #Resilience #DisasterRiskReduction #Sustainability #TMTogether
