I used to think a good painting was all in the details. My thinking has changed. I believe it’s the feeling, and the use of simplicity. My course, Atmospheric environment concept art, is finally open. We start before a single line is drawn, with a mood in mind or maybe just a sentence. I’ll show you how I turn that into a brief with design pillars, so your painting has direction instead of drifting. Then we sketch and generate ideas, build a brutally simple composition, work out values in black and white, and bring in color without it getting muddy. Finally we refine what matters, leave the rest alone, and finish. It’s the same process I use on client work and on my book Black Shore.
